Powder Mountain + Snow Basin

Winter in Utah

By Jon Hogan

The first snow skiing trip I ever went on was a family trip to Deer Valley, Utah in elementary school. I returned my senior year of high school for a winter trip to Park City after ultimately becoming a snowboarder on trips Colorado my freshman, sophmore, and junior year. I have been lucky to ride: BreckenridgeKeystone, and Vail, Colorado as well as Snowbowl in Missoula, Montana. All of these ski destinations are authentic in their own right, although this post is all about breaking from the norm, going beyond the beaten path, and the uniqueness of riding on a bluebird day atop Utah's pure and abundant powder .

Powder Mountain

Eighty miles north of Deer Valley and Park City is Powder Mountain, a ski resort approximately 55 miles from at the Salt Lake City International Airport. Powder Mountain is recognized as the largest ski resort in the United States and arguably within all of North America encompassing 8,464 skiable acres. The resort limits day lift tickets and season passes in an effort to keep the skiable density less than 1 acre per skier. Other resorts in the area may at times have in excess of 9 skiers per acre. We arrived in Utah on Friday, January 13, 2017 and stayed through Tuesday the 17th. After renting a Jeep Grand Cherokee we made the hour and a half drive to our accommodations at the Worldmark by Wyndham Wolf Creek located in Eden, Utah. After settling in we headed to Carlos & Harley's for dinner and had a fun night on the town. The next morning we picked up groceries from the Valley Market before hitting the slopes all day. The second day on the hill we had Lucky Slice Pizza and drank cold beer and enjoyed live music at the Timberline Lodge. The following day we had take-out from the Mad Moose Cafe. Read more about Powder Mountain's History and plan your next winter ski trip to Utah.

Snow Basin

Snow Basin is a ski resort roughly 24 miles from the Powder Mountain Ski Resort. Salt Lake City was awarded the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in 1995 and Snowbasin was selected as the venue for the men’s and women’s downhill, super G and combined races. We had a great day on the mountain and covered a lot of terrain taking the Needles Gondola to the Needles Lodge at 8,710 feet.
